Osun LG elections to hold as scheduled – Governor Adeleke

Governor Ademola Adeleke has reaffirmed that the local government elections in Osun State will proceed as planned on Saturday, despite ongoing tensions between the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a statement released on Friday by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, the governor maintained that the electoral process would not be halted.

This announcement comes in the wake of a Court of Appeal ruling that reinstated APC-backed local government officials who had previously been removed by the state government.

The decision has intensified political disputes over control of the local councils.

Meanwhile, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, had on Thursday cautioned Governor Adeleke against proceeding with the elections.

He argued that the reinstated officials still had a valid tenure until October 2025, and any fresh elections would be unconstitutional.

Fagbemi stated, “The Court of Appeal judgment effectively restored the tenure of the elected officials, which remains in effect until October 2025.

Insisting on holding another election would not only be invalid but would also constitute a serious constitutional violation. Furthermore, the recent Supreme Court ruling affirming local government autonomy reinforces the need for a proper and lawful transition process.”

Despite these concerns, Governor Adeleke, while addressing a delegation of civil society organizations in Osogbo, reassured the public that the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) was fully prepared for the polls.

“Our people are ready for the elections tomorrow. They want to elect their representatives at the grassroots level,” the governor said.

He further commended OSSIEC for its preparation, noting that multiple political parties were participating and that all candidates would have an equal opportunity to test their popularity.

Governor Adeleke urged all stakeholders to adhere to democratic principles and maintain peace during the process.

“The election will take place as scheduled, and I believe its outcome will drive development at the local level. I encourage our people to remain peaceful, as Osun is known for its tranquility,” he concluded.
