June 12: Group seeks Babangida’s apology over election annulment

The Bola Tinubu Support Organisation, UK chapter, has demanded a public apology from former military president, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (retd.), for annulling the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

In a statement issued on Friday, the group’s Head of Media and Publicity, Mr. Muyiwa Adeliyi, condemned the annulment of the election, widely regarded as Nigeria’s most credible.

The election was won by Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola.

Adeliyi’s call follows Babangida’s recent acknowledgment in his autobiography that Abiola emerged victorious.

The former military leader admitted: “I have no doubt he won the election.” His statement has reignited national discourse on the issue.

Describing Babangida’s remarks during his book launch in Abuja as “a step in the right direction but insufficient,” Adeliyi insisted that only a formal apology could address the injustice done to Abiola and Nigerians.

“For over 30 years, Nigerians have lived with the painful memory of that stolen mandate,” he said.

“General Babangida must go beyond words. The honourable course of action is an unreserved, public apology.”

Adeliyi emphasized that the annulment of the June 12 election on June 23, 1993, remains one of Nigeria’s most significant political blunders.

He noted that it led to widespread protests, global condemnation, and prolonged political instability.

Abiola was later arrested while attempting to reclaim his mandate, and his detention ended with his tragic death in 1998, further deepening national grievances.

Adeliyi stated that many Nigerians in the diaspora believe Babangida’s admission is inadequate.

“True reconciliation requires more than acknowledging past mistakes,” he said.

“A formal apology would contribute to national healing. Babangida must take full responsibility for the consequences of his actions.”

He also urged the National Assembly to intervene, suggesting that a public apology, aired on national television, along with reparations for Abiola’s family, would be appropriate.

“Abiola’s widow, Kudirat, was assassinated in 1996 while campaigning for democracy. Her death remains a painful reminder of the struggle for justice,” Adeliyi added.

He stressed that addressing these demands would aid in healing national wounds.

“Babangida has a chance to correct history. Leaders are judged not just by their actions but by their willingness to make amends. It is time for him to apologise to Nigerians. His admission has reopened old wounds but also offers an opportunity to confront our past.”
