Kwara Shariah Court calls for Shariah implementation in Southwest Nigeria

Justice Abdur-Raheem Ahmad Sayi, Qadi of the Kwara State Shariah Court, has advocated for the adoption of Shariah law in family and commercial matters across Southwest Nigeria.

Speaking at the 30th Pre-Ramadan Lecture organized by the University of Lagos Muslim Alumni (UMA), themed Transformative Power of Ramadan, Justice Sayi emphasized that the existing legal framework does not sufficiently address the needs of Muslims in these areas.

He stated, “Family law is a crucial aspect of private law that requires legal protection. Governments in the Southwest should consider implementing Shariah to ensure fairness and justice for all.”

At the same event, Professor Moshood Baderin highlighted the holistic nature of Islam, explaining that it goes beyond spirituality to encompass all aspects of human life. He noted that the five pillars of Islam influence societal interactions, adding, “The Shahada is not just a faith declaration but also a commitment to serving humanity.”

Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, delivered a keynote address, commending UMA for sustaining the lecture series over the past three decades. He stressed the importance of Ramadan in promoting self-discipline, generosity, and spiritual growth.

“Ramadan is more than just fasting; it is a time for self-reflection, purification, and extending kindness to those in need,” he said.

Dr. Hamzat also cautioned against the potential dangers of Artificial Intelligence (AI), urging parents to guide their children responsibly in the digital age. Additionally, he raised concerns about the increasing trend of men neglecting their responsibilities, leaving women to raise children alone.

Representing the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos, Prof. Bolanle Oboh commended UMA’s dedication to Islamic education.

She also noted that this year’s Ramadan coincides with the Christian Lent, making it a significant period for spiritual reflection.

UMA President, Abdulmumin Alao, outlined the association’s various initiatives, particularly its scholarship program supporting underprivileged Muslim postgraduate students pursuing academic careers.

During the event, distinguished guests, including Senator Idiat Oluranti Adebule and Ogun State Deputy Governor, Engr. Naimot Salako Oyedele, made notable financial contributions to the scholarship fund.

The occasion also featured an awards ceremony recognizing key Islamic scholars and leaders such as Sheikh Jubril Ramadan, Sheikh Abdurrahman Ahmad, and Prof. Moshood A. Baderin for their contributions to the development of Islam in Nigeria.
