Lagos community protest demolition, call on Gov Sanwo-Olu to intervene

Community leaders in Oko-Addo, located in the Ajah area of Lagos State, have appealed to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to step in and halt the demolition of properties allegedly carried out by land grabbers.

They expressed concern over the frequent invasions by armed individuals, who reportedly force residents out of their homes using threats and intimidation.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, the Baale of Oko-Addo, Najeem Agunbiade, claimed that an army officer led the demolition exercise, accompanied by security operatives and state officials.

“This issue has been in court for years, and we were instructed to maintain the status quo,” Agunbiade stated.

“However, we suddenly saw security agents and officials demolishing houses, claiming they had government approval.”

He further alleged that the invaders arrived with armed personnel, forcing residents to vacate their properties under military threats.

Malik Eshinlokun, the property secretary of the community development association, described the demolition as a major setback that has left many residents without shelter.

“We have defended this land for over two decades. The army officer insists he purchased it from the government, but the land originally belongs to the indigenes, passed down from our ancestors since the time of King Addo, the first King of Lagos,” Eshinlokun explained.

He urged the state government to intervene, investigate the situation thoroughly, and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
