CD urges Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to apologize over alleged misconduct

The Campaign for Democracy (CD) has faulted the actions of suspended Kogi Central Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, accusing her of engaging in activities that could harm Nigeria’s reputation.

The group claimed that rather than seeking redress through legislative procedures, she has been involved in a campaign against the Senate.

In a statement on Thursday, CD expressed concern over her recent actions, both within and outside the country, describing them as inappropriate.

The organization maintained that her conduct amounted to misconduct and urged her to issue a formal apology.

It also called on political leaders to prioritize national interests over political differences, particularly in sensitive matters.

The group criticized her for linking her suspension to allegations of sexual harassment against the Senate President.

It also condemned her participation in the Inter-Parliamentary Union without official approval, arguing that such an act breached diplomatic protocols and misrepresented Nigeria on an international platform.

CD further expressed disappointment that, despite taking legal steps to challenge her suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan has chosen to engage in media campaigns and international lobbying instead of allowing due process to unfold.

The group warned that such actions could weaken Nigeria’s democratic structures and reduce public trust.

Additionally, the organization backed the ongoing recall efforts by her constituents in Kogi Central, emphasizing that lawmakers must be accountable to the people they represent.

It reminded public officials that holding office is a privilege tied to public service and trust.

CD urged Akpoti-Uduaghan to reconsider her approach, respect the dignity of her position, and focus on fostering national unity rather than engaging in disputes on the international stage.

The organization also encouraged Nigerians to embrace constructive dialogue in resolving political conflicts, stressing that personal interests should not come at the expense of the country’s image.
