Obi commends police for withdrawing Emir Sanusi’s invitation

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has praised the Nigeria Police Force for rescinding their invitation to the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi.

Obi described the invitation as unnecessary, warning that it could have exacerbated an already tense situation.

Earlier, the Emir had been summoned over an alleged murder during the Sallah festivities in Kano last Sunday, after he had cautioned against holding the traditional Durbar—a ceremonial parade following Eid prayers.

Reports indicate the incident occurred when Sanusi returned to his palace on horseback, after walking to Eid prayers.

In response to public outcry, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, withdrew the invitation and instructed the Kano State Police Command to collect Sanusi’s statement regarding the matter.

Reacting to the development, Obi expressed his approval in a post on his X handle on Monday, commending the timely decision.

He emphasized that the decentralization of such matters would foster peace and strengthen public trust in the police.

“I commend the Nigeria Police Force for its wise and timely decision to withdraw the invitation extended to His Royal Highness Muhammadu Sanusi II,” Obi stated.

“Given the current societal tensions, the invitation was unnecessary and could have further inflamed the situation.”

Obi also pointed out that the Kano State Police Command, with its adequate resources, is fully equipped to handle such issues, underscoring the importance of addressing matters at the state and zonal levels through senior police officers.

He concluded, “Once again, I appreciate the decision to withdraw the invitation.

A decentralized approach will promote peace and enhance public confidence.”
