A devastating case of suspected food poisoning has claimed the lives of five siblings in Ogidi, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State. Their mother is currently in critical condition.
The father of the deceased, 79-year-old retired soldier Robinson Arinze Aghalu, said the incident occurred shortly after the children consumed a meal prepared by their mother.
The children reportedly began suffering from severe stomach pain, vomiting, and other symptoms soon after eating.
Despite being rushed to several medical facilities, including a local maternity clinic, Iyienu Mission Hospital, and Crown Hospital, five of the six children succumbed to the illness.
The sixth child survived, as they were staying with a relative at the time of the incident.
The mother, who also exhibited similar symptoms, is currently receiving treatment in hospital.
A doctor involved in her care said food poisoning is the suspected cause.
A family relative said the tragedy has left the household in shock and mourning. “Pa Aghalu is now left with only one surviving child.
The community is rallying around the family to offer support,” the relative stated.
The family has appealed for assistance to help cover medical expenses.
Pa Aghalu’s bank account details have been shared with well-wishers willing to offer support.
