The Vatican announced on Friday that the official inauguration of Pope Leo XIV will be held on May 18 with a mass at St. Peter’s Square.
The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. local time (0800 GMT).
Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, was elected on Thursday following four rounds of voting by the papal conclave.
His election was confirmed with the traditional appearance of white smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling the selection of a new pope.
He becomes the first American to be elected to the papacy.
According to the Holy See, Pope Leo XIV will retain Pope Francis’s senior staff at the Vatican for the time being. His first general audience is set for May 21.
