Bauchi teaching hospital to investigate alleged negligence in patient’s death

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH) in Bauchi State has announced the launch of an internal investigation into the death of a female patient, following allegations of staff negligence.

The hospital’s Head of Public Relations and Protocol, Usman Koli, made this known in a statement shared on his official Facebook page on Tuesday.

The response came after a Facebook user, Ibrahim Katagum, publicly alleged that his mother died due to improper care while undergoing dialysis at the hospital’s Renal Centre.

In a post written in Hausa, Katagum claimed that a nurse left his mother unattended while she was connected to a dialysis machine.

According to him, “I found the nurse outside chatting with others, while our mother was tied to the blood filter.

At that moment, the tube transferring blood in and out of her abdomen had come loose, and all her blood spilled onto the floor while the nurse was outside.”

Katagum further alleged that the doctors who later examined the patient were surprised by the timing of her death, based on her condition earlier that day.

In response, Koli confirmed that the hospital is treating the incident with seriousness and has initiated a thorough internal investigation.

“We are committed to getting to the root of the matter and will not hesitate to take the necessary and appropriate measures to address any identified lapses and prevent future occurrences,” he said.

He expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased and encouraged the public to report concerns through the hospital’s official complaint channels.

Koli cautioned against handling such sensitive matters on social media, emphasizing the importance of a structured and respectful resolution process.

“The hospital management remains committed to upholding the highest standards of care and accountability,” he assured.
