Twenty-seven passengers drowned in a tragic boat accident in Kwara State while returning from a market trip in Niger State.
The incident, which occurred three days ago at night, highlights ongoing safety concerns just seven months after a similar disaster claimed over 100 lives in Gbajibo community, Kaiama Local Government Area.
Eyewitnesses and a survivor reported that the boat, designed to carry 100 passengers, was heavily overloaded with nearly 300 people on board.
The accident happened during a heavy storm accompanied by strong winds and impending rain.
The Chairman of Kaiama Local Government, Abdullah Danladi, confirmed the tragedy and led a government delegation to console the victims’ families.
He warned that the government will no longer tolerate the frequent boat accidents in the area.
Danladi also announced plans to establish a committee to enforce strict regulations, including mandatory life jacket use and a ban on night travel by local boats.
The Emir of Kaiama, His Royal Highness Muazu Umar, pledged to increase awareness campaigns to ensure compliance with water safety rules among passengers and boat operators.
