Aiyedatiwa Receives UNIMED Visitation Panel’s Report, Promises Implementation of Key Reforms

The Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has commended members of the Visitation Panel set up to review the operations of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, describing their work as a critical step toward institutional development and excellence.

He gave the commendation on Monday during a courtesy visit by members of the panel to his office in Akure, where they formally submitted their report detailing findings and recommendations on the institution’s performance and structure.

While receiving the two-volume report, Governor Aiyedatiwa expressed appreciation for the panel’s diligence and objectivity, noting that although he had yet to study the report in full, its scope and depth were already evident.

He particularly lauded the panel’s decision to focus on institutional positions rather than individuals, stating that such an approach is essential for sustainable growth and continuity.

“What makes me particularly pleased is the fact that you focused not on individuals, but on the positions they occupy. That is how institutions are built and sustained,” the Governor said, adding that proper structures and processes must be put in place to guide whoever assumes leadership roles within the university.

He assured the panel that the report would not be shelved but critically examined and acted upon, saying; “Your labor and sacrifices will yield visible results. The real reward is in seeing your recommendations drive real change in our university system.”

The Governor emphasized that the ultimate aim of the panel’s work is to elevate UNIMED into a world-class institution.

“The whole idea is to build a better university; one that can compete globally, provide a top-tier learning environment, and become a model of excellence among specialized institutions,” he said.

Governor Aiyedatiwa assured that the government would prioritize the implementation of actionable recommendations in the report, reiterating his administration’s commitment to transforming education in Ondo State through deliberate, well-informed interventions.

Earlier in his remarks, the chairman of the panel, Professor Victor Olumekun, said the panel had worked tirelessly over eight weeks to carry out a comprehensive review of UNIMED’s operations.

He explained that the team examined both the terms of reference provided and other vital aspects that could influence institutional growth.

“Our focus was on processes and systems. We made a deliberate effort not to judge personalities, but rather to assess the positions and roles they occupy. We believe that whoever occupies any position must be guided by structure, accountability, and performance standards.” Olumekun said.

Professor Olumekun also advocated for a culture of annual performance reviews in the university system to ensure continuous improvement, rather than only assessing progress at the end of a tenure.

He noted that such evaluations would increase accountability and help administrators remain focused on institutional goals throughout their terms.

In attendance were Deputy Governor Dr. Olayide Adelami, Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Taiwo Fasoranti, Chief of Staff, Prince Segun Omojuwa and the Head of service, Mr. Bayo Philip.
