Human rights lawyer and counsel to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Ifeanyi Ejiofor, has called on President Bola Tinubu to suspend the monthly media briefings held by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, describing them as wasteful and unnecessary.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ejiofor criticized the media chats as a misuse of public funds, alleging that they cost hundreds of millions of naira each month and serve primarily as a platform for political grandstanding.
“With Nigerians facing record inflation, stagnant wages, and widespread poverty, it is unconscionable for the FCT Minister to spend such large sums on what amounts to a publicity event,” the statement read.
Ejiofor argued that the resources could be better used to address pressing issues such as disaster relief, education, healthcare, and support for internally displaced persons.
He urged President Tinubu to take immediate steps to curb what he described as “flamboyant spending” and redirect focus toward essential public services.
“This is not the time for showmanship,” Ejiofor said. “It is a time for responsible governance and prioritizing the needs of the people.”
