NiMet forecasts rain, thunderstorms nationwide from sunday to tuesday

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted widespread rainfall and thunderstorms across the country from Sunday to Tuesday.

In its weather outlook released on Saturday in Abuja, NiMet said that morning thunderstorms are expected on Sunday in parts of Taraba and Adamawa states, with further rain and thunderstorms later in the day across Taraba, Adamawa, Katsina, Kano, Zamfara, Kaduna, Jigawa, Borno, Gombe, and Bauchi states.

For the North-Central region, cloudy conditions are expected in the morning, followed by thunderstorms and rain in areas including the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, and Plateau states.

In the southern region, the morning will be mostly cloudy, with rain showers anticipated later in the day across Oyo, Ogun, Ondo, Ebonyi, Ekiti, Edo, Abia, Imo, Enugu, Anambra, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, and Bayelsa states.

On Monday, morning thunderstorms with rain are expected in Sokoto, Zamfara, and Bauchi states.

Later in the day, more thunderstorms are likely in Sokoto, Zamfara, Taraba, Adamawa, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa, Borno, Bauchi, and Kaduna.

In North-Central Nigeria, the morning may bring thunderstorms and rain to the FCT, Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa, followed by similar conditions in Plateau, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Kogi, and Benue states by evening.

In the South, morning rains are forecast in Cross River, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom, with widespread rain expected across the entire region later in the day.

For Tuesday, isolated morning thunderstorms with moderate rain are forecast in Zamfara and Kaduna.

By afternoon and evening, thunderstorms with rain are expected in Taraba, Kaduna, Adamawa, Zamfara, Kano, Bauchi, Gombe, and Borno.

In North-Central Nigeria, morning thunderstorms are likely in Niger, Plateau, and Benue, with further rain forecast for the FCT, Nasarawa, Kogi, Benue, Niger, Kwara, and Plateau in the later hours.

Morning rain is also anticipated in Lagos and Bayelsa, with rainfall expected across the southern states during the day.

NiMet advised the public to take precautions, warning that strong winds may accompany the storms.

People are encouraged to secure loose items, avoid driving during heavy rain, disconnect electrical appliances, and steer clear of tall trees.

Airline operators are advised to obtain airport-specific forecasts for safe planning, and residents are urged to stay updated with the latest weather information from NiMet.
