Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, visited Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State on Monday following a deadly attack that claimed dozens of lives.
Egbetokun, accompanied by Chief of Defence Staff General Christopher Musa, assessed the scale of the destruction and held talks with local community leaders.
Their visit was confirmed in a post on the official X account of the Nigerian Police Force.
The police chief also directed the immediate deployment of additional tactical units to the area to strengthen security.
The move follows widespread public outrage over the attacks, which spanned two days and were reportedly carried out by suspected herders. Official figures put the death toll at 45, but local authorities estimate the number could be as high as 200. Victims reportedly included entire families and some security personnel.
There has been growing criticism of the Federal Government’s response to the crisis, especially its silence in contrast to the swift intervention in Rivers State earlier this year, where a state of emergency was declared despite no reported fatalities.
