The Anambra State Police Command has presented cheques totaling N8 million to the families of 13 police officers who died in active service.
The cheques were handed over by the Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, during the command’s monthly meeting held on Friday at the Police Headquarters in Awka.
According to a statement released on Saturday by the command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the beneficiaries included the family of an Inspector who was accidentally killed by a “friendly force” at a Police Observation Point along the Onitsha-Owerri Expressway near Danaks Fuel Station, along with 12 others who died in the line of duty.
Ikenga explained that the gesture is part of the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Schemes, an initiative by the Inspector-General of Police to support families of fallen officers and boost morale within the Force.
“The CP presented cheques worth over N8 million to the families as part of the welfare package provided by the Inspector-General of Police,” the statement read.
“This initiative is not only to provide relief but also to encourage serving officers, knowing their families will be supported in the event of any unfortunate incident.”
While presenting the cheques, CP Orutugu expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police for prioritising personnel welfare and urged the beneficiaries to invest the funds wisely to support the dependents left behind.
The meeting also featured security briefings from Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers, during which new strategies for enhancing public safety across the state were discussed.
Additionally, officers received lectures from key stakeholders, including representatives from a major insurance company, the Officer in Charge of the Police National Housing Fund, the Pension Desk Officer, and Assistant Commissioner of Police, Anietie Eyoh, who spoke on operational strategies.
CP Orutugu reaffirmed the commitment of the Anambra State Police Command to maintaining peace and security, assuring residents that officers will continue to carry out their duties diligently and professionally.
