The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to give speedy assent to the bill establishing the Federal University of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Ikare-Akoko.
This call was made during the union’s monthly congress held on Thursday, June 26, 2025, at the NUJ Press Centre, Alagbaka, Akure, with members from various chapels in attendance.
The congress was presided over by the state chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite.
In a communique issued at the end of the meeting, the NUJ commended the National Assembly for the timely passage of the bill and described the proposed institution as a timely and strategic step toward expanding access to quality higher education in Ondo State.
The union noted that the university, when operational, would contribute significantly to Nigeria’s digital growth, innovation, and manpower development.
The NUJ appealed to President Tinubu to sign the bill without delay to ensure the immediate take-off of the university and to position Ondo State as a key player in the nation’s ICT advancement.
Beyond education, the congress deliberated on a range of national and local issues including the economy, politics, security, agriculture, environmental challenges, and the welfare of journalists.
The congress also lauded the NUJ National Executive Council, led by Comrade Alhassan Yahya, for successfully hosting the union’s 70th anniversary celebrations, while encouraging members nationwide to remain dedicated to ethical journalism and nation-building.
Expressing concern over the rising number of out-of-school children in Ondo State—particularly those displaced from northern Nigeria—the NUJ urged both state and federal governments to develop sustainable programs to reintegrate these children into the formal education system to prevent future societal threats.
The communique was signed by the State Secretary, Olaoluwa Meshack, on behalf of the drafting committee.
