BREAKING: Atiku Abubakar resigns from PDP, cites party’s decline

Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned from the party.

His resignation comes amid preparations for the 2027 general election and follows his involvement in the formation of a new political alliance, the Alliance Democratic Congress.

Atiku conveyed his decision in a letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025, addressed to the PDP chairman of his Jada 1 ward in Jada Local Government Area, Adamawa State.

A copy of the letter was shared on Wednesday via X (formerly Twitter) by his Special Assistant on Media.

In the letter, Atiku expressed deep appreciation for the opportunities he had within the party, including serving as Vice President for two terms and twice running as its presidential candidate.

He described the decision to leave as heartbreaking but necessary, citing the party’s departure from its founding values.

“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for,” the letter read. “It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognising the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.”

He concluded by wishing the party and its leadership success in the future.

More details to follow.
