The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) says the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) will determine the next steps in the case involving fuji musician Wasiu Ayinde, popularly known as K1 de Ultimate, following a recent airport altercation.
NCAA spokesperson, Michael Achimugu, stated this on Friday in response to KWAM 1’s public apology over the August 5 incident at the domestic wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, where the singer was filmed in a confrontation with ValueJet Airline officials.
The footage, which went viral, showed the artiste in what appeared to be an attempt to obstruct an aircraft preparing for take-off.
The controversy prompted swift sanctions from the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, and the NCAA, including a six-month flying ban on KWAM 1 and the suspension of the pilots involved.
The NCAA also petitioned the AGF and IGP, seeking the singer’s probe and prosecution.
In his apology released on Friday, KWAM 1 described the incident as “unfortunate,” explaining that he suffers from chronic dehydration and was carrying a water flask, not alcohol as speculated.
He said the flask was empty during security checks and only filled at the airport lounge, adding that CCTV footage could verify this claim.
The veteran musician stressed his commitment to promoting Nigeria’s image, saying, “I would never do anything to tarnish the reputation I’ve built over five decades or diminish the country I love so dearly.” He tendered an “unreserved and heartfelt” apology to the Presidency, Ministry of Aviation, FAAN, NCAA, ValueJet, Nigerians, and his fans.
Responding to the apology, Achimugu said he had yet to see it but emphasised that the matter was now with the AGF and IGP. “We have referred the case to the Inspector General of Police and the Attorney General of the Federation, who are better positioned to determine and communicate the next steps,” he said.
Keyamo also acknowledged seeing the apology on social media but noted that no official deliberation had yet taken place.
As of press time, the police and AGF had not provided updates on the petitions.
