Teenager arrested for kidnapping, killing five-year-old cousin
The Enugu State Police Command has arrested an 18-year-old, Ikediekpere Obodoagu, for allegedly kidnapping and murdering his five-year-old cousin, Wisdom Obodoagu.
Police spokesman, SP Daniel Ndukwe, said in a statement on Wednesday that the suspect was apprehended alongside an accomplice, Sunday Michael, 24, a security guard at 9th Mile Corner, Enugu.
The arrests were made on August 11 and 12 by operatives of the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad.
The child was first declared missing on July 26.
Investigations later revealed that Ikediekpere used Michael to demand a ransom of ₦1 million from the victim’s father in an attempt to hide his involvement.
When the ransom was not paid, the teenager allegedly killed the child and buried him in a bush near their home in Okinitor, Amankwo-Ngwo, Udi Local Government Area.
“The suspects confessed to the crime during interrogation,” Ndukwe said, adding that the prime suspect led operatives to the site where the child’s remains were exhumed in the presence of medical personnel, who certified him dead.
The Commissioner of Police in Enugu, Mamman Giwa, condoled with the grieving family and assured that the suspects would be prosecuted.
He reaffirmed the command’s resolve to crack down on violent crimes and ensure justice for victims.
