Former Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, is dead.
He reportedly passed away at Cedarcrest Hospital, Abuja, on Saturday.
Arase, who became Nigeria’s 18th Inspector-General of Police in April 2015 under former President Goodluck Jonathan, retired from the force in 2016 after more than three decades of service.
After his retirement, he continued to play key roles in national security and governance.
He was appointed Chairman of the Police Service Commission in January 2023 by ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, before being removed by President Bola Tinubu in June 2024.
A seasoned intelligence officer, Arase had previously headed the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, the police’s top intelligence unit.
He also served as Commissioner of Police in Akwa Ibom State, and later as Assistant Inspector-General in charge of intelligence.
His career included international assignments, notably a United Nations peacekeeping mission in Namibia.
As of press time, neither his family nor the Nigeria Police Force had issued an official statement confirming his death.
