The New Nigeria Peoples Party has been thrown into fresh crisis following the expulsion of Abdulmumin Jibrin, the lawmaker representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
A faction of the party loyal to former Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, announced Jibrin’s expulsion, accusing him of anti-party activities and failure to pay mandatory dues.
The announcement was made by the faction’s chairman, Hashim Dungurawa.
But in a swift reaction, another faction led by Jibrin Doguwa dismissed the expulsion as illegal and insisted he remains the authentic state chairman of the party.
“I am the legitimate chairman of the party. This decision was made without our consent, so it has no effect,” Doguwa said, warning that legal action would be taken if the expulsions continued.
He also defended Jibrin’s recent remarks during a television interview, saying they did not amount to anti-party activity.
“What he said was not anti-party. Every politician has the right to change political platforms.
Even President Bola Tinubu moved from one party to another before becoming who he is today,” Doguwa argued.
Jibrin, who has in recent days hinted at the possibility of defecting from the NNPP, had said on national television that he was free to join any political party of his choice, including the APC, PDP, ADC, or PRP.
