Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has ordered the arrest and prosecution of operatives of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA) Brigade involved in Tuesday’s shooting near Emeka Offor Plaza, Onitsha Main Market.

The directive followed reports that the enforcement team opened fire while carrying out duties in the bustling commercial hub, triggering chaos and leaving casualties, including a pregnant woman, in the incident.

In a statement on Tuesday, Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, confirmed that one of the victims, identified as Miss Chinwe Igwe, was confirmed dead on arrival at the hospital. Others injured are said to be responding to treatment.

Governor Soludo also directed that the medical bills of the victims be covered by the government.

“We appreciate the swift intervention of the Police, who have restored calm and order to the area.

An investigation into the incident has commenced, and government will ensure all necessary measures are taken to prevent a recurrence,” Mefor said.

The OCHA Brigade, a state-backed enforcement outfit established to implement environmental and sanitation regulations, has faced repeated allegations of harassment, extortion, and excessive use of force.

The latest shooting has reignited concerns about accountability and professionalism within the unit.

Police patrols and monitoring have since been intensified around the market to maintain peace.
