The Ondo State Police Command has recovered a stolen Toyota Camry and exposed a car theft syndicate after weeks of investigation.

Police spokesperson, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, said in a statement that detectives traced the vehicle to an apartment in Owo, where it had been repainted from gold to blue in an attempt to conceal its identity.

The car, a 2010 unregistered Toyota Camry, was stolen in July from the Osi area of Akure. The owner, Madam Akomolafe Bolanle, said the thieves broke into her home around 4 a.m., stole her car keys, and fled with the vehicle and other valuables.

The Camry was later found in the possession of one Fagbote Michael Olamilekan, who was arrested.

He confessed to buying the car for ₦4 million from a man identified only as Adewumi, now on the run. Investigators also linked the repainting of the car to a local painter, who has also fled.

The police have launched a manhunt for the remaining suspects and warned artisans in the automobile trade to verify vehicle documents before working on cars. “Anyone found aiding criminals, knowingly or otherwise, will face prosecution,” the command warned.

Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, commended the detectives for their diligence and assured residents of the command’s commitment to securing lives and property across the state.
