The Edo State Police Command has recovered ₦300,000 extorted from a furniture maker by officers attached to the Oba Market Area Command, Benin City, and placed the culprits under detention.
Police spokesperson, Moses Yamu, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, noting that the affected officers would face disciplinary procedures in line with the regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.
“The officers involved have been promptly identified, the money has been fully recovered and returned to the victim, while the said officers have been detained and are to face disciplinary procedures,” the statement read.
Yamu added that stern administrative measures have also been taken against the Oba Market Area Command to enforce professionalism and respect for citizens’ rights.
He urged residents to report any unprofessional conduct through the Command’s Public Complaints Bureau or Complaints Response Unit.
The Command, under Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika, reaffirmed its commitment to integrity and accountability, while commending AIG Salman Dogo of Zone 5 Headquarters for supporting efforts to entrench transparent policing.
This development comes months after six officers and a Chief Superintendent of Police were placed under disciplinary trial over a viral extortion case along the Benin Bypass. Inspector-General of
Police Kayode Egbetokun had at the time condemned the act as “shameful, distasteful, and utterly unacceptable,” reiterating the Force’s zero-tolerance stance on corruption and misconduct.
