The six-month emergency rule imposed in Rivers State will officially end tomorrow, bringing to a close a period of federal control aimed at stabilising the troubled oil-rich state.
The federal government declared the emergency on March 18, 2025, after political unrest, violent protests, and a breakdown of security threatened governance and public safety. During the period, democratic structures were suspended, and the state was run by appointed officials under the supervision of the presidency.
Presidency sources confirmed there are no plans to extend the measure, citing improved security and ongoing preparations to restore democratic governance.
Reactions among residents and stakeholders remain divided.
While many have welcomed the return to civilian rule, others fear renewed instability once political activities resume.
