JUST IN: Senate extends recess, shifts plenary resumption

The Senate has postponed its planned resumption of plenary sittings, moving the date from September 23 to October 7, 2025.

The adjustment was announced in an internal memo signed by Chinedu Akubueze, Chief of Staff to the Senate President, and circulated to lawmakers on Tuesday.

Although no official explanation was offered, sources within the National Assembly hinted that the delay was to enable senators to fully observe the October 1 Independence Day celebrations.

The memo, titled Notice of Shift in Plenary Resumption Date, expressed regret for the late notice. It read in part: “The resumption of plenary sitting of the Senate, earlier scheduled for Tuesday, 23rd September, 2025, has been shifted to Tuesday, 7th October, 2025.

Any inconvenience this short notice may cause is deeply regretted.”

The Senate had adjourned on July 24 for its annual recess, with Senate President Godswill Akpabio describing the move as “chamber reciprocity,” since the House of Representatives had also proceeded on break.

With this latest extension, deliberations on pending motions, oversight matters, and executive confirmations will remain stalled until the chamber reconvenes.
