The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old man, Mutawakilu Ibrahim, for allegedly stabbing his grandparents to death during a quarrel over food at their residence in Kofar Dawanau Quarters, Dala Local Government Area.
Police spokesman, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, said the incident occurred on Thursday around 9:30 a.m. and was reported to the Dala Divisional Police Headquarters.
The suspect, who was allegedly under the influence of intoxicants, attacked his grandfather, Muhammad Dansokoto, 75, and grandmother, Hadiza Tasidi, 65, inflicting multiple stab wounds.
The victims were rushed to Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, where doctors confirmed them dead on arrival. Their remains have since been released to the family for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Homicide Section, for further investigation. “The suspect will be charged to court upon completion of investigations,” Kiyawa said.
Security experts have repeatedly linked rising cases of violent crimes within families in Kano to drug abuse, mental health struggles, and economic hardship.
Authorities continue to warn that substance abuse among youths fuels violent behaviour and domestic disputes, sometimes with tragic consequences.
