The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for a forensic investigation into the death of Arise Television anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, who was reportedly killed during an armed robbery at her home in Katampe, Abuja, on Monday, September 29, 2025.

In a statement signed by its secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle, the NUJ urged the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to unravel the circumstances surrounding her death and bring the perpetrators to justice without delay.

The union described Maduagwu’s passing as a devastating blow to her family, colleagues at Arise News, and the wider Nigerian media industry.

“Somtochukwu was a brilliant, passionate, and dedicated broadcaster whose professionalism and poise endeared her to colleagues and viewers alike.

She represented the best of a new generation of Nigerian journalists—bold, ethical, and committed to the truth,” Oyekunle said.

The NUJ extended condolences to her family, friends, and colleagues, stressing that her tragic death underscores the nation’s worsening insecurity and the urgent need for accountability.

The statement further urged journalists to honour her memory by upholding the values she stood for—integrity, excellence, and service to society.

“Though her life was brief, her impact was profound. May her legacy continue to inspire courage and truth in journalism,” the council added.

The NUJ also called on media professionals nationwide to remain united, vigilant, and supportive of one another during the period of mourning.
