The Ondo State Police Command has arrested ten suspects following a violent attack on Igoba community in Akure North Local Government Area, where hoodlums allegedly attempted to assassinate the traditional ruler, Oba Adinlewa John.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Saturday, saying the incident occurred on October 2 at about 11:30 a.m.
According to the statement, the attackers — armed with guns, knives, charms, and other dangerous weapons — invaded the community, injuring a resident identified as Mrs. Ogunoye Oluomo and dispossessing her of her valuables before heading to the monarch’s palace.
“They attempted to assassinate His Royal Highness, Oba Adinlewa John, but the royal father narrowly escaped the life-threatening assault,” the police said.
Upon receiving a distress call, the Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, deployed tactical teams led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations) to the area.
The operation led to the arrest of ten suspects who, according to the police, have confessed to their roles in the attack.
Recovered items include two locally made pistols, one single-barrel gun, live ammunition, charms, knives, machetes, and other weapons used during the incident.
The police said the injured victim is receiving treatment and responding well, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects. Normalcy has since been restored to the area.
CP Lawal reiterated the command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, warning criminal elements to steer clear of Ondo State or face the full weight of the law.
“The Nigeria Police Force under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, remains steadfast in its proactive and people-centered policing approach,” the statement added.
The command urged residents to go about their lawful businesses without fear, assuring them of sustained security across the state.
