The Nigerian Army has begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Lieutenant Samson Haruna, an officer serving under the 2 Brigade, Akwa Ibom State, who died from injuries sustained in a fire incident in Uyo.
Haruna reportedly suffered severe burns following the fire outbreak on September 22, 2025, and later died on October 6 while receiving treatment at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital.
In a statement issued in Uyo on Friday, the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 2 Brigade, Captain Lawal Muhammad, said the Army had set up an inquiry to determine the cause of the incident and would make the findings public upon conclusion.
“An investigation was instituted at the onset of the incident to ascertain the circumstances surrounding it before the demise of the officer.
The outcome of the investigation will be made public upon its conclusion,” Muhammad stated.
He explained that the officer was promptly evacuated to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where he received comprehensive medical attention before succumbing to his injuries.
According to the statement, the Army expressed deep condolences to the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased and assured that it remains committed to professionalism, discipline, and accountability in handling issues involving its personnel.
“The Nigerian Army deeply commiserates with the family, colleagues, and friends of the deceased officer and prays for the repose of his soul,” the statement added.
The Army noted that the investigation would help determine if foul play was involved and ensure transparency in line with military ethics and operational procedures.
Over the years, the Nigerian Army has maintained a policy of conducting internal inquiries into incidents involving its personnel, especially those resulting in injury or death.
The military has also faced increasing public scrutiny over isolated cases of such incidents, prompting renewed efforts to strengthen accountability and openness within the ranks.
