Tanker-trailer collision, fire outbreak destroy property worth millions in Oyo

Two separate incidents involving a fuel tanker collision and a fire outbreak have caused extensive property damage in Oyo State, though no lives were lost, authorities said on Friday.

The first incident occurred in the early hours of Friday when a fire gutted a residential building and several shops in the Oke Elerin area of Ogbomoso, destroying properties worth millions of naira.

Confirming the incident, the Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, said firefighters swiftly responded to the emergency and prevented the flames from spreading to nearby buildings.

“The fire personnel, led by CFS Dairo Rasheedat, promptly mobilized to the scene. Upon arrival, we met six rooms and three shops in an old residential building engulfed in flames.

The team immediately swung into action, curtailing the fire and stopping it from spreading to adjoining structures,” Akinwande said.

He added that no casualties were recorded, and efforts by the fire service helped save properties valued in millions.

He further noted that the cause of the fire had not yet been established, as investigations were ongoing to determine its origin.

In a related incident, a tanker conveying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) was involved in a collision with a trailer along the Ibadan–Oyo Expressway on Thursday.

The tanker, with registration number T30874 LA, reportedly lost control while in motion and rammed into a Man Diesel cargo trailer with registration number TRR 611SA (Bauchi).

According to Akinwande, firefighters were quickly deployed to the scene to prevent an explosion after fuel began gushing from the tanker.

“On arrival, our team observed that the tanker, loaded with 45,000 litres of PMS, had collided with a trailer. Firefighters covered the spillage with foam compound to suppress it and prevent ignition.

No casualties were recorded, and properties worth millions of naira were saved,” he stated.

The Oyo State Fire Service urged motorists to maintain caution while driving and adhere strictly to safety measures to prevent avoidable disasters.
