Hundreds of Islamic groups and their supporters on Saturday staged a protest in Kano against recent comments by United States President Donald Trump over alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
The protesters, who marched through major streets in the city, condemned Trump’s reported threat to deploy American forces to Nigeria if the Federal Government fails to curb what he described as “Christian genocide.”
They carried placards with inscriptions such as “We condemn Trump’s threat to attack Nigeria,” “There is no Christian genocide in Nigeria,” and “America wants to control our resources.”
Trump had recently listed Nigeria among countries of “particular concern” over alleged religious persecution, sparking outrage among some Muslim groups.
Addressing the crowd, one of the leaders of the protest said the former US president’s comments were misleading and capable of stoking religious tension in the country.
The Federal Government has dismissed claims of Christian genocide, describing them as unfounded and contrary to the realities on the ground.
