Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, witnessed two separate petrol tanker crashes within a 24 hour window, prompting emergency responses across the metropolis.

The first incident occurred on Wednesday evening around Methodist, along the Lagos Ibadan Expressway, when a tanker laden with 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit overturned after reportedly losing control.

The vehicle, registered A143XA (Osun), slid into a ditch, spilling fuel in the process.

Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Maroof Akinwande, who confirmed the development, said no lives were lost.

He noted that firefighters swiftly deployed chemical foam to suppress the spill and prevent an explosion, adding that movement on the route had since been restored.

Akinwande said officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps were on ground throughout the operation.

Barely hours later, another tanker fell along the Ojoo axis on the Ibadan Oyo Expressway.

The vehicle, marked KJA67XF (Lagos), reportedly veered off the highway while conveying about 40,000 litres of petrol.

Again, no casualties were recorded. Akinwande disclosed that the spill response was jointly handled by the state fire service, the Federal Fire Service Ibadan Command and other security agencies.

He said firefighters quickly neutralised the flammable content to avert a potential blaze.

Authorities urged motorists to exercise caution, particularly along fuel transport routes, as investigations into both crashes continue.
