The Oyo State Police Command has taken a 35-year-old hunter, Waheed Rasaki, into custody for allegedly killing his colleague, Femi Oyedepo, during a hunting trip in Ibadan.
Police spokesman, Olayinka Ayanlade, disclosed this in a statement issued in Ibadan on Wednesday, noting that the shooting occurred on Tuesday, January 7, in the Oretan Ijaiye axis of Moniya, Akinyele Local Government Area.
According to Ayanlade, Rasaki reported himself to the Moniya Divisional Police Headquarters shortly after the incident, claiming the gun discharged accidentally during the expedition.
He said, “At about 21:20hrs, the suspect walked into the station to report that around 14:00hrs, he mistakenly shot his partner, Oyedepo, while hunting in the Oretan Ijaiye Forest.
The victim collapsed and died immediately.”
Ayanlade added that operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer visited the scene, recovered the body and detained Rasaki, while investigation into the circumstances continues.
“The development reflects the Command’s resolve to respond swiftly to both criminal and accidental fatalities and ensure accountability,” he said.
In a separate incident, the Command confirmed the arrest of a suspect linked to the killing of a student of Michael Adeniyi Koleoso Polytechnic in Saki.
Ayanlade said a team of officers responded to a distress call around 2:30pm on the same day, reporting a violent clash among students at the Challenge 1 area behind the institution.
He explained that the unidentified student sustained a gunshot wound to the back.
The victim was rushed to Tunmise Private Hospital in Saki, where he later died.
“One spent cartridge was recovered at the scene. A male suspect, Olatunji Segun, has been arrested.
Investigations are ongoing to unravel the motive and those behind the attack,” the statement reads.
Commissioner of Police, Femi Haruna, was quoted as commending officers who took part in both operations, noting that their efforts also resulted in the arrest of violent suspects and the rescue of kidnap victims in other operations.
Haruna assured residents that the Command remains committed to crime prevention and prosecution of offenders.
He urged residents to stay security-conscious and promptly report suspicious movements to nearby police formations.
