The Anambra State Police Command has taken into custody a masquerade alleged to have assaulted residents during a funeral in the Awgbu community, Orumba North Local Government Area.
Spokesman for the command SP Tochukwu Ikenga disclosed this in a statement on Monday, warning that the police would not watch while individuals hide under cultural traditions to harass citizens.
Ikenga said the suspect was captured after a viral video showed the masquerade chasing and attacking mourners during the burial, an act the command described as unlawful and disruptive.
“The command has arrested the masquerade involved in the unprovoked attacks that caused a disturbance of public peace in Awgbu,” the statement said.
It added that the behaviour displayed was unacceptable and would not be tolerated in any form across the state.
Ikenga noted that the masquerade is in custody while operatives continue efforts to identify and apprehend others connected to the incident.
Further updates, he said, would be released as investigations progress.
