The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a suspected car snatcher and recovered a Toyota Corolla allegedly stolen from a ride-hailing driver in Uyo, the state capital.

The command said the suspect robbed the Bolt driver of his vehicle at gunpoint before fleeing the scene.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Timfon John, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday.

According to the statement, the incident occurred late on January 20, 2026, when police operatives on routine night patrol around the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, responded to a distress call from the driver, whose identity was withheld.

John said by the time the operatives arrived at the scene, the assailants had escaped with the vehicle.

However, prompt intelligence-led efforts enabled the police to trace the stolen car to Nkwot Ikono Village in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of the state.

She added that one suspect, identified as Sunday Okon, from Nna Enin Village in Uruan Local Government Area, was arrested in possession of the Toyota Corolla with registration number DKA 337 CB.

“The suspect confessed to the crime during preliminary interrogation,” the police spokesperson stated, noting that he is currently in custody.

The command said investigations were ongoing to track down other members of the gang and recover weapons allegedly used in carrying out the robbery.

The statement added that the Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, commended the operatives for their swift response and professionalism, while reassuring residents of the command’s resolve to tackle violent crime and protect lives and property across the state.
