A faction of the African Democratic Congress has ignited fresh political debate after its National Chairman, Nafiu Bala Gombe, announced a sweeping age restriction that disqualifies individuals above 55 years from contesting elective positions under the party’s platform.
Gombe, who disclosed the policy during an interview with BBC Hausa, said the move forms part of a broader strategy to hand over political leadership to younger Nigerians ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to him, the decision is aimed at dismantling entrenched political structures and creating space for a new generation of leaders driven by innovation and energy.
He maintained that the party, under his leadership, is committed to repositioning itself as a platform that prioritises youth inclusion, stressing that Nigerians must embrace a shift from what he described as outdated political approaches.
Gombe argued that limiting eligibility based on age would accelerate generational transition and encourage young people to actively participate, not just as voters but as candidates and decision-makers.
He said the ADC remains open to all Nigerians but insisted that the current direction of the faction is focused on empowering younger aspirants to shape the country’s future.
