Armed insurgents suspected to be members of Boko Haram and ISWAP have reportedly launched another coordinated night attack on Benishiekh town in Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State.
Sources said the assault, which began around 11 p.m. on Tuesday, was directed at a military formation along the Maiduguri–Damaturu highway, heightening fresh fears over security in the troubled region.
Benishiekh, the administrative headquarters of the local government area, has witnessed repeated attacks in recent times, with the latest incursion said to be targeting the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation Hadin Kai.
The development comes days after a deadly assault on the same location, where a senior military officer, Brig.-Gen. O. O. Braimah, and several soldiers were killed.
Residents said the sound of gunfire and movement of armed fighters threw the community into panic as the attackers advanced toward the military base.
Meanwhile, increased aerial activity was observed around Maiduguri, located about 75 kilometres from the affected town, with fighter jets and military helicopters seen patrolling the airspace, suggesting an ongoing response by security forces.
