Alleged missing twin sparks uproar at Lagos hospital, police launch probe

Tension flared in the Ikotun area of Lagos on Wednesday after a woman accused a private medical facility of withholding one of her newborn twins, triggering a heated confrontation captured in a viral video.

The footage, widely circulated on X, showed the distraught mother clutching a baby while confronting medical personnel at a facility identified as Tip-Top Solution Hospital, insisting that she had delivered twins and demanding the release of the second child.

In the video, the visibly agitated woman repeatedly accused the hospital of depriving her of her baby, as relatives and sympathisers at the scene called for the arrest of staff over suspected foul play, including allegations of child trafficking.

An obstetric scan report displayed in the footage, said to belong to the patient, Blessing Isioma David, 28, indicated a twin pregnancy.

The document, dated March 2026, reportedly showed two foetuses with distinct positions and heart activity, identifying one as male and the other as female.

However, the hospital management denied the allegation, maintaining that only one baby was delivered.

The Medical Director, Sunday Babajide, attributed the confusion to an alleged error in the earlier scan result.

He explained that the procedure was witnessed by the patient’s husband, who was present in the theatre, and insisted that both the husband and the patient were informed immediately after the delivery that only one baby was born.

Babajide further argued that inaccuracies could occur in ultrasound results, particularly depending on the timing of the scan, noting that the examination in question was conducted at about 20 weeks of pregnancy. He added that the hospital ought to have advised a repeat scan at another centre to confirm the initial findings.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed that it had commenced an investigation into the incident following the circulation of the video.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the command was working with relevant professional bodies to unravel the circumstances surrounding the claim.

She assured that a thorough probe was underway to establish the facts and address public concerns over the allegation.
