Renewed violence has hit communities in Plateau State following the killing of a 30-year-old man, Elisha Abbas Saku, by suspected gunmen during a late-night attack in Bassa Local Government Area.
The incident, which occurred around 10pm on Thursday, threw residents of Riwhie-Chwo in Nzharuvo, Miango District into panic as armed assailants reportedly stormed the area and carried out the attack.
Saku was said to have been ambushed and killed in what community sources described as a coordinated assault, further heightening tension in the troubled locality.
Reacting to the development, the Irigwe Youth Movement condemned the killing, describing it as barbaric and unprovoked.
In a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Joseph Yonkpa, the group expressed grief over the incident and called for comfort for the bereaved family and the Irigwe community.
The statement read in part, “On the night of April 16, 2026, gunmen attacked Riwhie-Chwo in Nzharuvo, Miango District of Bassa LGA, killing Mr. Elisha Abbas Saku, aged 30, in a brutal ambush. We pray for the repose of his soul and for divine comfort for the entire Irigwe Nation.”
The latest attack adds to growing security concerns in parts of the state, where communities have repeatedly come under assault by armed groups, with residents calling for urgent intervention by security agencies.
