The police Force, Nasarawa State Command, has arrested a 62-year-old man, Mamuda Hassan, for allegedly dealing in counterfeit currency.

Hassan, said to be a resident of Anchor Zaria in Kaduna State, was apprehended by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Lafia following actionable intelligence.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Ramhan Nansel, disclosed the arrest in a statement issued on Saturday.

According to him, the suspect was nabbed at a cattle market in Lafia while allegedly attempting to circulate fake N1,000 notes.

Nansel added that the suspect confessed during interrogation that he obtained the counterfeit currency from an accomplice based in Mararaba Akunza area of Lafia, who is currently on the run.

He noted that efforts were underway to track down and apprehend the fleeing accomplice.

Reacting, the Commissioner of Police in the state, Shetima Mohammed, urged members of the public to exercise caution during cash transactions.

He specifically advised traders, Point of Sale operators, fuel attendants, and transport workers to remain vigilant and scrutinise banknotes carefully.

The police boss also highlighted common indicators of counterfeit currency, including poor print quality, repeated serial numbers, irregular note sizes, and absence of key security features, urging residents to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
