Tragedy struck around the University of Benin on Sunday after a part-time student of the institution was reportedly shot dead near the main gate of the Ugbowo campus.

The student was said to have been attacked inside his vehicle under circumstances that remain unclear as of the time of filing this report.

A video circulating on social media showed the aftermath of the incident, which caused panic among residents and members of the university community.

Sources claimed that the victim had just completed his semester examinations before the attack, although the university authorities have yet to officially confirm the claim.

Reacting to the development, the management of the institution distanced the university community from the incident, suggesting that the killing might be linked to suspected cult-related activities outside the campus environment.

The university expressed sadness over the incident and urged students and staff members to remain calm, vigilant and security conscious while continuing their academic activities peacefully.

The management also reassured members of the institution of its commitment to maintaining safety and security within the campus.

As of press time, the Edo State Police Command had yet to release an official statement regarding the killing.
