No fewer than three persons have lost their lives, while about 10 buildings were destroyed following a violent outbreak in Ilesha Baruba, Baruten Local Government Area of Kwara State.

The Kwara State Police Command confirmed the incident and disclosed that a manhunt had been launched for individuals involved in the attacks.

According to the police, the unrest was triggered by a confrontation between an Islamic cleric, Mohammed Ilyasu, and an unidentified Fulani man. Both men reportedly sustained machete wounds during the altercation and were rushed to hospital for treatment.

Police authorities said the cleric was pronounced dead on arrival, while the other victim later succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention.

The situation reportedly escalated when some youths stormed the hospital, forcefully removed the corpse of the deceased suspect and set it ablaze.

In a further twist, another individual who was said to be passing through the area was allegedly attacked by the mob and burnt to death.

The violence also led to the destruction of property, with about 10 buildings belonging to members of the Fulani community reportedly set ablaze. Among the affected structures was the residence of the Ardo Fulani, Alhaji Hassan.

In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the police said a joint security team comprising police officers and military personnel was immediately deployed to the troubled community, restoring calm and preventing further escalation.

The Commissioner of Police, Ojo Adekimi, condemned the attacks and warned residents against resorting to self-help or taking the law into their own hands.

He stressed that criminal acts would not be tolerated under any circumstance and assured that those responsible for the killings and destruction of property would be identified and prosecuted.

The police command further appealed to residents to remain peaceful and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could aid ongoing investigations.

Authorities said efforts were underway to track down all those connected to the violence as security operatives continue to maintain a strong presence in the area.
