A young woman identified simply as Eno has lost her life after she was reportedly knocked down and crushed by a speeding vehicle within the campus of Rivers State University, Port Harcourt.
The tragic incident occurred on Tuesday night along Road A of the institution, where the victim, believed to be in her early 20s, was struck by a vehicle said to be part of a convoy.
Sources within the university disclosed that the impact of the collision threw the victim to the ground, causing severe head injuries that led to her death.
Witnesses said some occupants of vehicles in the convoy fled the scene shortly after realising the victim had died.
The development triggered an immediate response from the university’s security personnel and the police, who reportedly sealed off all exit routes within the campus in a bid to apprehend those involved.
It was gathered that operatives of the Nkpolu Divisional Police Headquarters, led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Henry Ogbuefi, worked alongside the university’s internal security team to track down suspects linked to the incident.
The operation led to the arrest of two individuals identified as Onunaka K. and Daniel Ikechi, who were reportedly driving a Toyota Camry Spider and a Mercedes-Benz E300 respectively.
Sources said both suspects are students of the institution.
The suspects were subsequently taken into custody at the Nkpolu Divisional Police Headquarters in Mile 3, Diobu, while the remains of the deceased were evacuated and deposited in a mortuary.
An official of the university, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the institution’s management would issue a formal statement on the incident.
The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed both the fatal accident and the arrest of the two suspects as investigations continue.
