A prosecution witness on Thursday told the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja that a sum of $6.23m was allegedly withdrawn from the Central Bank of Nigeria using forged documents during the tenure of the former CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele. The witness, Bashirudden Maishanu, an Assistant Director at the apex bank and the 11th prosecution witness, testified before Justice Hamza Muazu in the ongoing trial instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission against Emefiele. The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a husband and wife for allegedly staging their own abduction and extorting N10m from their families and associates. The suspects, identified simply as Fred and Goodness, were said to have concocted the fake kidnapping to raise funds for the husband’s planned return to the United States after expected financial support from sponsors failed to come through. Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have arrested two suspected armed robbers and rescued an abducted woman during separate security operations in Mubi North and Hong Local Government Areas of Adamawa State. The Nigerian Copyright Commission has confiscated and destroyed 5,061 pirated books with an estimated market value of N50.61m in Ondo and Ekiti states. The destruction exercise was carried out on Thursday at the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps office in Akure, Ondo State. The Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday granted former Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, permission to travel to Saudi Arabia to observe the last 10 days of Ramadan in Mecca. Justice Emeka Nwite gave the approval after Bello’s counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN), moved an application seeking the temporary release of the ex-governor’s international passports to enable him perform the lesser hajj.
