A Kaduna Chief Magistrates’ Court on Thursday ordered that a 23-year-old student, Rabiu Garba, be given 12 strokes of the cane for stealing a laptop and two cell phones. The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, sentenced Garba after he pleaded guilty to the two-count of trespass and theft. The convict, who resides at Badiko in Kaduna, who had pleaded guilty earnestly appealed for leniency from the court, vowing to reform his ways. A 61-year-old lecturer, Chinyere Agatuekwe, has been arraigned before the Gwagwalada Magistrates’ Court in FCT for allegedly intimidating her tenant. The police charged Ms Agatuekwe, who lives in Aco estate, Abuja, with criminal conspiracy, intimidation and assault. The prosecutor, Abdullahi Tanko, told the court that Agba Nwabueze, of Lugbe, Abuja, reported the matter to the area command office on March 26. A 58-year-old woman, Busayo Komolafe, was on Thursday arraigned before the Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing property valued at N400,000. The defendant was charged with felony and stealing. The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge. The prosecutor, Clément Okuiomose, told the court that Komolafe committed the offences at about 5:22p.m on April 27 at Ikoga, Badagry, Lagos. The Osun Amotekun Corps has arrested an ex-convict, Yekini Sulikaleni, 30; and Toheeb Yekini, 35, for allegedly breaking into a shop at Oje Oniyan area in Iwo town in the Iwo Local Government area of the state. The naira on Tuesday depreciated at the official market, trading at N1,416.57 to the dollar. Data from the official trading platform of the FMDQ Exchange, a platform that oversees the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Market, showed that the naira lost N62.36. This represents a 4.60 per cent loss compared to the previous trading date on Monday when it exchanged at N1,354.21 to a dollar. However, the total daily turnover increased to 160.77 on Tuesday, up from 84.83 million dollars recorded on Monday. Meanwhile, at the Investor’s and Exporter’s window, the naira traded between N1,445 and N1,301 against the dollar. (NAN)
