Beneficiaries of Diaspora remittances through International Money Transfer Operators (IMTOs) shall henceforth receive such inflows in the foreign currency (US Dollars) through the designated bank of their choice, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has directed. The central bank stated this in a circular titled: “Amendment to Procedures for Receipt of Diaspora Remittances,” dated November 30, 2020, that was signed by its Director, Trade and Exchange Department, Dr. Ozoemena Nnaji. The policy is part of efforts to liberalise, simplify and improve the receipt and administration of diaspora remittances into Nigeria.

The customers are by a new regulation released on Monday, allowed to receive their funds through foreign currencies of their choice, including payment of the funds into domiciliary accounts. The new policy, contained in a circular signed by CBN Director, Trade & Exchange Department, O.S. The Ondo State High Court sitting in Akure has sentenced three persons to death in connection with the abduction of three Reverend Sisters. The men kidnapped the nuns at the Onipetesi area along the Ore-Lagos Expressway in the Odigbo Local Government Area of the state in 2016. A sum of N1m ransom was paid before the victims were released after 11 days in the kidnappers’ den. Seven persons were arrested in connection with the incident, including a couple.
