Finnish Court remands Simon Ekpa over terrorism charges
A Finnish court has ordered the remand of Simon Ekpa, a self-proclaimed separatist leader, for allegedly spreading terrorist propaganda on social media.
The Päijät-Häme District Court issued the remand following Ekpa’s arrest, alongside four others, by the Finnish National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) on charges of terrorism-related offenses.
Ekpa, who claimed to be the Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile, is accused of committing the offense in 2021 in Lahti, Finland.
AFRIPOST gathered that he was remanded for disseminating terrorist propaganda on social media platforms.
According to a statement released by Finland’s Central Criminal Police, Ekpa was arrested on suspicion of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent. Four other suspects were detained for allegedly financing these activities. The arrests were reportedly carried out earlier this week as part of an investigation involving international cooperation.
“Claims will be heard in the Päijät-Häme District Court today, November 21,” the police confirmed in their statement.
Ekpa has been at the center of controversy due to his role in the Sit-At-Home movement, which has significantly disrupted economic activities in Nigeria’s Southeast region. He is also accused of ordering attacks on security operatives, particularly at checkpoints, leading to multiple casualties among officers and civilians.
Calls for Ekpa’s arrest have grown over the years due to his alleged incitement of violence and promotion of unrest in Nigeria while operating from Finland.
