Gov. Fintiri revokes Atiku, ex-Gov, others’ traditional titles in Adamawa

Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has withdrawn several traditional titles, including those previously held by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Governor Boni Haruna, and even himself.

The move comes as part of a broader restructuring of emirates and chiefdoms across the state.

Governor Fintiri made the announcement during the coronation of the newly installed Chief of Madagali, explaining that the reorganization was necessary to modernize the traditional system and align district heads with the newly created emirates and chiefdoms.

“As a result, traditional titles granted under the old emirates and chiefdoms are now invalid. The newly established traditional councils are instructed to propose new titles for approval in accordance with statutory customs,” Fintiri stated.

The restructuring primarily impacts titles awarded under the Adamawa and Mubi emirates.

Among those affected, Governor Fintiri has relinquished his title of Sarki Yaki Mubi, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has lost his title as Waziri Adamawa, and former Governor Boni Haruna has been stripped of his Makama Mubi title.

Several other prominent figures have also been affected.

With all newly formed emirates and chiefdoms emerging from the Adamawa and Mubi emirates, the governor emphasized that the changes were necessary for a fresh approach to traditional leadership.

To facilitate the transition, Fintiri directed traditional councils within the restructured emirates to submit recommendations for new titles, which will be reviewed and approved in line with state traditions.

He also clarified that the Lamido of Adamawa, the state’s highest traditional ruler, could propose Atiku Abubakar, Boni Haruna, and others for reconsideration.

However, any reinstatement or new appointments would require final approval from the state government.
