Lagos Assembly members dismiss reports of reconciliation meeting with Obasa

Lawmakers in the Lagos State House of Assembly have refuted claims that they held a reconciliation meeting with Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

Obasa was reinstated on Monday, March 3, 2025, following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, who stepped down under pressure from party leaders and stakeholders.

A report published on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, suggested that the Speaker had engaged in discussions with Assembly members to resolve differences.

However, legislators present at the meeting have denied that reconciliation was on the agenda.

They stated that the gathering was brief and did not involve any effort to address grievances.

“One of the major issues that led to his removal happened again. The meeting was scheduled for 1 p.m. but didn’t begin until 2:30 p.m. We waited for over an hour, yet there was no apology for the delay.

He simply acknowledged that we were still upset about how he was reinstated and moved straight to the agenda. None of us spoke during the meeting,” a legislator disclosed.

Another Assembly member confirmed that while a meeting did take place, its focus was on a legal case filed against them by the suspended Clerk, Olalekan Onafeko.

“The case will be heard on Thursday. Though it is a civil matter, we were concerned that he involved the Department of State Services (DSS), leading to the arrest of some colleagues. Apart from that, nothing significant was discussed. The meeting was short, and we all left afterward,” the lawmaker explained.

He further revealed that Obasa’s return was not fully supported by lawmakers but was influenced by respected political figures such as Baba Bisi Akande and Aremo Olusegun Osoba.

“In reality, many of us still do not want him in that position. There is widespread dissatisfaction within the Assembly, and the legislative body may not function as smoothly as before. We are waiting for him to step down, as per the agreement with the Baba Akande-led committee, so that the House can regain its stability and progress,” he added.
